Definition

Dumbing down refers to a phenomenon, real or perceived, of a reduction in educational standards for a course that, in theory, covers the same material or teaches the same knowledge and skills.

Dumbing down is similar to the (real or perceived) phenomenon of grade inflation, where the amount of competency required to attain a particular grade decreases over time.
