Definition

The cognitive load imposed by a task refers to the extent to which that task uses working memory. Cognitive loads are typically considered in the context of learning tasks. Whereas some people consider higher cognitive load to be bad (so that the goal is to learn with the least amount of cognitive load possible that accomplishes learning), strategies for deeper learning (better encoding) may require higher cognitive load, so it's not totally clear that higher cognitive load is always bad.
